Are You
Suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), We can not stress how important it is for all Post Tubal Women to get hormone testing. Tubal ligations (TL) are known and proven to cause hormonal imbalances. Having just a mild imbalance can cause shock to your system and can cause serious health problems. While natural menopause is a slow and
forgiving change There is only one sure way to find out if you are suffering from a hormonal imbalance or from hormone shock and that is to get your hormone levels tested and analyzed. Note: It has been our experience that doctors do not always order the proper tests (even when given the list), often the testing is incomplete, and women are not given a copy of the results. I wish I had known this information about tubal ligations at the time of my TL. If I had known, and if I then had decided to go on to consent to the TL, at least I would have gotten treatment for my condition when I returned. I would have been informed and I could have said, "remember the side effects you had explained to me....." Prior to my TL in the fall of 95' I was having regular timely periods. I had my tubal a full 8 months after my daughter was born and my periods had come back and were normal. I was having regular and timely cycles. After the TL my periods changed immediately. Because I was having regular periods before and because they changed so drastically it was a very abrupt and noticeable change. I returned to the doctor that performed the TL many times complaining that I was no longer having periods but he repeatedly told me not to worry and the nothing was wrong. He never offered me hormone testing. He had not informed me prior to the surgery that a hormonal imbalance was a known risk of TL's and did not informed me as I was in front of his eyes, over a period of two years, fell into hormone shock. Hormone shock is not talked about anywhere. To date I have not found reference about hormone shock or the term widely used or mentioned anywhere. Hormone shock is known by the medical community but has not been widely written about and studied. What woman in her right mind would volunteer to be part of such a study... having her ovaries removed or destroyed, forgoing HRT and allowing herself to fall into hormone shock on propose so that her physical and mental effects could be studied? I believe Hitler did some studies such as these, but these studies are not published on the internet. Hormone shock affects you physically and mentally. Physically it's affects your whole being. Women's bodies use estrogen in literally every cell in our bodies (this includes brain cells) and when all of a sudden the hormones are turned off or is abruptly altered it plays havoc with your system. It changes your whole natural balance and changes the way you think, and can change your perception of reality. Your mood changes, your sex drive changes, and your zest for life, or "happiness level" changes. Some hormones give women euphoric and at peace with the world sensations. Yes, some hormones are natural endorphins that greatly benefit a woman's overall mental health. This change in one's "happiness level" might be considered mental, but it is caused by a physical cause... the change in her hormone levels. The physical effects of hormone shock can cause you to become physically sick and suffer real physical conditions. What about a hormonal shock causing auto immune disease, or other conditions that are hormonal in nature such as Graves Disease, Lupus, and Diabetes? What about bone loss? Physical effects of hormone shock can be compared to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The change in your balance causes you to have no energy and you always feel tired. Not only can your vaginal area become dry, but other areas was well such as your skin and nasal passages. Small things such as a sinus infection becomes chronic and requires antibiotics to clear, but the infections never stop. Women in hormone shock suffer symptoms that mimic irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and heart conditions. You may be thinking right now... "that's me...!" Many post tubal women are diagnosed by the medical community with CFS, IBS, and heart conditions. Are you really suffering these conditions or are you suffering from a hormonal imbalance/hormone shock? Where you ever hormone tested? If so, what levels were tested and what were the results? Did you ever see the results or were you verbally told that all your levels were normal? Hormone shock causes server PMS type symptoms. This is not your typical PMS but can be to the point of murderous rage to uncontrollable tears. These depression type symptoms often get misdiagnosed as post postpartum depressions, or common depression and many women suffering from hormone shock and hormonal imbalances caused by their TL are put on antidepressants. Are you depressed? Could your depressing be caused by a hormonal imbalance/hormone shock? This severe hormone change causes serious mood swings and changes our logical thinking. Add to this the lost desire for sex. Hormones are very, very powerful. Having your hormones taken away, or experiencing even a slight imbalances can literally cause a woman to go mad. The depression, confusion, memory loss, and personality changes that hormone shock causes can affect marriages and work performance. How many marriages break up after a women has a TL and suffers a hormonal imbalance? What has this done to society as far as single parent families? I know that my marriage was on the verge of crumbling while I was suffering dementia. How many marriage counselors see couples in distress after the woman has a TL? The issue of information being withheld by the medical community has been compared to the large cigarette companies withholding information about the side effects of cigarette smoking. The only difference is when people got sick from smoking cigarettes they did not return to the same people who caused their condition and who withheld the information from them to start with. Their conditions were diagnosed. The obgyn community has a monopoly on this information. Women don't have a choice but to return to the same doctors and organizations that withheld the information from them to begin with. This gives the medical community special power, the power to imprison. Women who are sick, asking for help, asking to get out of this sick physical condition caused by a lack or imbalance of hormones are denied an exit. No one else but the medical community that created their conditions has the power to help free them. Because of the formation of the Coalition for Post Tubal Women and this internet site (tubal.org), women are now returning to their doctors and telling them that they now have the knowledge that TL's cause hormonal imbalances, that they know that they are suffering from a hormonal imbalance, and are asking their doctors and the medical community for help and testing. Having the doctors/medical community hold fast that TL's do not cause hormonal imbalances, telling women that they are to young to be menopausal and refusing them help and refusing to hormone test them is a form of imprisonment. These women are imprisoned within themselves and are at the mercy of the medical community. Post Tubal Lab Examples I know from first hand experience how bad hormone shock can be and how it imprisons you. I lived in this condition for more then two years until I was diagnosed. Still even with HRT my condition is not corrected and I still live with levels being imbalanced as you'll see by the following lab examples. Most post tubal women with hormonal imbalances are never diagnosed. The few who are diagnosed suffer much longer then two years. I can't even comprehend living with the grave health condition that had been caused by my TL for longer then I did. The following is a summary of the blood work that I've had to date starting with a thyroid test in June of 97' almost two years after my surgery.... I had no idea what was wrong with me or that Dr. X had caused my condition. He had been telling me all along that I was fine, "perfectly healthy", and that there was nothing for me worry about. |
In June of 97', after almost two years of hell, Dr. X (who performed the TL) finally ordered some tests to check my levels. I wondered why he had not ordered the tests before now, but was happy that he was finally looking into the matter of why I wasn't getting my periods. I was hopeful that it would provide some answers why my health was failing. At this point in time I was literally in a state of dementia but I had no idea what was wrong with me. At that point I had been on antibiotics at least 9 times since the TL for sinus infections - not knowing that menopause can trigger allergies/ CFS symptoms. |

| Before my TL
I was never sick and never needed antibiotics. After the TL I was so sick at times
that I thought if I didn't get better that I would die. With the dementia I thought that I
was developing Alzheimer's Disease and at the rate of my decline I thought that my husband
would soon have to put me in a mental institution. I couldn't hold my urine, I was
sleeping maybe 2 or 3 hours each night, and I was beginning to be afraid to drive
(and admitting it) because of my forgetfulness and confusion. I couldn't
stay focus on anything. This didn't happen overnight, but came on strong and slow over the course of 1 1/2 years. I was under the assumption that Dr. X was ordering the correct tests to show what might be wrong with me and he inferred to me that he was doing so. He wrote out an order for some blood tests and I went down to the lab and had the blood drawn. A few days later I got a call from the office telling me that my levels were normal. (see results below) He told me that if I didn't get my period in the next month that I should come back for a progesterone in oil shot to bring on a period. Up until this point I had the utmost trust in my doctor. I had been going to him for almost 12 years. |

I made an appointment and went back to see Dr. X. I told him that his nurse had informed me that there were other tests that should have been done and that I wanted those tests ordered for me. (I also must remind you that I was in hormone shock and not thinking entirely clearly). He inferred that the nurse didn't know what she was talking about, and pacified me by telling me that those other tests were very expensive and wouldn't show anything. He told me that he didn't think that my insurance would pay for the tests especially since I had just had the other tests come back normal and they would question why he then ordered more tests. He kept steering me to have the shot to bring on a period. (Other post tubal women are steered to take the pill). Dr. X inferred to me that the shot would correct my condition. I wanted the other tests ran but he made it clear to me that he was only offering me the shot. I had no choice but to go along with his program. I asked him what if I didn't get a period after the shot, would he then order me the tests? He said yes he would, but not to worry, because the "shot works for everyone". I consented to have the progesterone in oil shot. He told me that he wanted me to call him in two weeks and let him know if I got my period yet. I waited two weeks just as he told me to. Two weeks later I still had not gotten my period so I called the office as I was instructed to. I had to argue with the receptionist that the doctor wanted to know if I had gotten my period, and told her that just to be sure she should pass on the information to the doctor. He called me back later that day and said "not to worry", he was sure I'd be getting my period "soon". Two more weeks went by, and no period so I called the office and demanded that I have the other tests done. I didn't even know what the other tests were or what he'd be ordering. He still was saying that he didn't think they were necessary but he had no choice but to order more testing for me. I went in and had more blood drawn, this time the correct levels were checked. (see results below). |
My FSH and LH levels were extremely elevated. Post Menopausal. No question about it. As I understand it, a FSH of 50 would be normal for a elderly post menopausal woman. It's pretty much accepted that FSH levels of 40 or more are considered post menopausal, meaning not peri, or getting close, but definitely through and past menopause. One doctor told me that castration with out treatment would had to have happened for my levels to have reached the levels that they were at. These two levels, the FSH and the LH, both directly correspond to ovarian function. These two labs shown above go to prove that a woman's thyroid levels can be within normal range even if a women has been castrated. It may just be that the FSH and LH and a few other key levels will be off. I asked another doctor shortly thereafter about these events. She really didn't want to comment, but then I posed to her the question, "What would you have done if I had presented myself to you 8 months after a tubal ligation complaining of missing periods?" and she told me that she would have, "checked my levels." My doctor missed many opportunities to check my levels, and then when he did finally order blood work he ordered the wrong tests. Then he purposely avoided ordering the proper tests when I requested them by trying to put me in a position (by bringing on a period) were it would appear that it wouldn't be necessary to order the tests. This crime is committed all the time with post tubal women when they are put on the pill with out hormone testing. The wrong tests and the shot he ordered was all a cover up. He knew exactly what tests he should have ordered. When he was backed into a corner he ordered exactly the two tests that were needed to diagnose my condition. He should have ordered these tests for me when I first returned to him shortly after the tubal. He committed fraud by not informing me during the consent that castration or hormonal problems were a possible risk/side effect of a TL. He committed battery and reckless conduct when he then performed the surgery and injured me, (I did not give him permission to cut or damage veins, arteries, capillaries, nerves, target cells, etc... In Illinois, any unwanted touching which results in injury (be it mental injury or physical injury) is a battery and falls under tort law. I suffered and am still suffering both. He then committed further battery by not diagnosing or treating me. If he had treated me I wouldn't of had the massive bone loss and the disabling hormone shock/dementia that I fell into. He knew what would happen to me physically and mentally if I was castrated and left untreated, but since he never informed me beforehand that this was a risk of the TL he wasn't about to inform me afterwards. To do so would have been admitting that my TL had caused my condition, that I wasn't informed prior to the surgery of this risk, and that he created this condition in me which requires that I now be on HRT for the rest of my life. I shudder to think what if I had gotten a period after I received the shot? How much more time would have gone by before I was finally diagnosed? How much more bone loss would have happened? How much more torture and suffering in a dementia state would I have experienced? What if it had gotten so bad that I was institutionalized or killed in a car accident because if my lack of concentration? I went on to have a full blood work done Feb. of 98'. This was done because my levels were pretty much normal with the exception of my FSH and LH which were both extremely elevated. This doctor wanted to repeat my levels and wanted to rule out auto-immune disease. I had more blood work done July of 98' at the time of my 2nd surgery and then more testing May of 1999 I've posted these results at the following pages. These pages takes awhile to down load but both show a good example of what a complete blood work up looks like. The purpose of posting this information here at the tubal site is to make a point of how important it is to have ALL your levels checked, not just one or two levels. Looking at only one to two levels (especially when the levels don't pertain to ovarian function) is like looking at only one or two pieces of a large puzzle. When you do get tested you should get copies of the results and examine them. Look to see if any of your levels close to the high or low limit of the range. Don't just go by the doctor "telling" you everything is normal. Check and see what was tested. What was NOT tested? Were do your results fall within the range?
Treatment
for my KNOW condition.... I'd like to explain what happened after I had the Sept. 97' FSH and LH tests. When the results came back Dr.X's partner called me with the test results. He told me, "You're post-menopausal. You are defienctly been through the change of life..." He told me that he wanted me to come into the office for HRT counseling, that I'd be given some samples to get started with, and that he also wanted to check the status of my uterus. He wanted me to make the appointment with him (the partner) right then but I called back and made the appointment with Dr. X. So now I was back at Dr. X's office and he had the opportunity to prescribe me HRT. Even though I was in a known menopausal state he never discussed any type of HRT with me at all (and he didn't check the status of my uterus). He put me on the pill, told me that I'd be feeling better soon, and to come back in 6 months. The pill is NOT HRT. I repeat... the pill is NOT HRT!!! R prescribing me the "pill", alone is cause for the Illinois DPR to take action upon him. It's like it's set in stone that all the doctors in the U.S. are instructed to put "post tubal women on the pill" if it's thought that she has a possible (or in my case a known) hormonal condition. The key word here is "post tubal". Woman in natural menopause or women who have had a hysterectomy with their ovaries removed would never be put on the pill for HRT. Here I was in a known menopausal state, but because I was post tubal I still received the pill. A large portion of post tubal women are put on the pill. No one receives, is offered, or is suggested hormone level testing. How many of those women are in hormone shock? Post tubal women are never told that the pill is being prescribed for them as a form of HRT or that there are other safer forms of HRT. The pill for most post tubal women is not something new to them. Most likely they have been on the pill at some point in their life and they know what to expect being on the pill. Doctors don't hormone test women when they put women on the pill as they do when they put women on HRT, so testing is not ordered and having many young women in their practice on the pill is not cause for alarm, when having many young women on HRT might be. Post tubal women are told other reasons why they are being put on the pill... reasons such as they are being put on the pill "to regulate your irregular periods" but it's never, never admitted that the pill is for HRT. What these doctors are doing when putting post tubal women on the pill is slipping them a hormonal "mickey". Here I was being put on the pill admittedly for HRT and being told that I'll have to take it for the rest of my life. Doctors I consulted with after this last meeting I had with Dr. X besides telling me that it was possible that he cut veins to my ovaries at the time of my TL surgery told me that the pill was very dangerous to stay on in my condition and that I could stroke out being on the pill. Both doctors stressed the seriousness of this, how wrong it was for Dr. X to have put me on the pill knowing that I was in a menopausal condition. One told me that the pill had estrogen levels 20 times what my system needed, (hence putting me at risk for a stroke out) and that the pill wasn't typically used as HRT just for this reason. I was told that I should switch to a safer HRT that had lower (safer) amounts of estrogen right away which I did. I consider Dr. X putting me on the pill yet another assault that he committed upon my person and question his motives for doing so. Was Dr.X trying to kill me at that point? Being on the pill would have caused me to begin cycling and most likely I would have had terrible periods come on. Maybe he was hopping I'd go on to need costly surgical procedures such as a D&C or possibly a hysterectomy? I wondered how many other women were being treated as I was treated. How many other post tubal women were post menopausal and were being given the pill as HRT? How many post tubal women were out there not knowing they were postmenopausal and on the pill? I went on to learn that it is many. Almost every post tubal woman I've spoken to describes many of the hormonal symptoms and has been put on the pill or has been suggested the pill at some point after her TL surgery. I believe that if my post tubal condition had been such to have caused me to have heavier/painful periods (which is the more typical PTS symptoms) that Dr.X would have put me on the pill (with out hormone testing) and would have gone on to suggest a D&C and ultimately a hysterectomy. Prescribing the pill to post tubal women for HRT (and not informing her it's for HRT proposes), not testing her hormone levels before prescribing HRT (or the pill), not giving her other options of HRT besides the pill, and refusing hormone testing when post tubal women request hormone testing is criminal and wrong. ALL Post Tubal Women need testing so they may find out if they are experiencing a hormonal imbalance. If she is post menopausal or experiencing a hormonal imbalance ALL options of HRT should be discussed so she may be a partner in deciding what type of HRT she takes. If you are Post Tubal and your doctor refuses to hormone test you now have the option of receiving testing through the National Hormone Testing Program. This program was put into place for ALL women. Lab work July 98 which was done at the time of my "2nd Surgery"
