The Letter

4-23-99

Dear. Mr. Nader,

On behalf of The International Committee for the Advancement of Woman's Health Care, Education. and Rights, NOW, and the CPTL Women, I present to you the following petition for your support in our efforts to expose the routine surgical and medical abuse of tubal ligation.

Women have not been given full disclosure and consent as to the risks associated with the procedure which has been and continues to be presented to the public at large as being 100% safe without negative impact on a woman's general functioning.

The medical literature and the clinical findings establish that many women are essentially castrated from their tubal ligation. The surgical castration of these women results in premature menopause, increased rates of osteoporosis, as well as increased rates of heart disease.

In Illinois the DPR has failed in its legislative duties to investigate the abuse of tubal ligation. The DPR is guilty of selective enforcement, refusing to investigate physicians such as Dr. X, and refusing to investigate the issue because of the enormous malpractice and negligence that will be uncovered.

Public Citizen's Health and Research Group (HRG) exposed the huge fraud and scandal of the tobacco industry's conspiracy to keep information about known risks of their product form the public sector and has also worked on issues such has the high numbers of C-sections.

This tubal consent issue needs to be addressed by the HRG. The issue parallels in many  ways what happened with the tobacco industry hiding their medical findings from the public.

The comparison also demonstrates the strength and power of the organizations involved as well as the magnitude the health consequences which have resulted. Health providers have literally caused and created an iatroepidemic.

Knowing of your compassion for women's issues and human rights we present to you this petition and pray your support.

Sincerely,
Susan J. Bucher
